In movies, television, advertising, video games and magazines, we are all constantly bombarded with messages about how we should look and behave. Unfortunately they are not always consistent with the values and norms that we aspire to for ourselves and for our children. Both Jennifer Newsom and Linda Burch have found unique ways to put the power back in the hands of individuals, parents and educators to make better media choices, and to persuade the advertisers and the media to present more representative, positive and balanced models for society. They will discuss the current state of these efforts, and what we can do to thrive in this new, pervasive world of media and technology.
Jennifer Siebel Newsom is a filmmaker, speaker, former actress, and advocate for women, girls, and their families.
She wrote, directed, and produced the 2011 Sundance documentary Miss Representation, which explores how the media’s misrepresentations of women contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence. Newsom launched MissRepresentation.org as a call-to-action campaign that gives women and girls the tools to realize their full potential. Newsom is an Executive Producer of the 2012 Sundance Award-winning documentary The Invisible War, which exposes the epidemic of rape in the U.S. military. She is currently in pre-production on her next film.
Newsom is also the founder and CEO of Girls Club Entertainment, LLC, which develops and produces independent films that empower women. As an actress, Newsom appeared in films and television shows including In the Valley of Elah, Something’s Gotta Give, NBC’s Life, and Mad Men.
Newsom currently serves as a board member of KQED; a member of the Girl Scouts’ Healthy Media: Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls; an advisory board member of Emerge America; and an honorary board member of the International Museum of Women. Newsom graduated with honors both from Stanford University and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Newsom resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, and their two young children.
Currently Linda leads Common Sense Media's education efforts, new program and strategy development. She brings deep experience in management and governance of early stage companies and nonprofit organizations to this role. She has dealt with the practical aspects of launching new products, negotiating partnerships, and building new ventures from the ground up, as well as broader strategic questions related to how to diversify and grow.
Before she co-founded Common Sense Media, she was Senior Vice President of Business Development and Corporate Planning at SyStemix, a biotechnology company that she helped build and then sold to Novartis. Previously, Linda was a strategic management consultant at McKinsey & Company in New York from 1985 to 1990, where she served healthcare and consumer-products companies. Prior to that she spent five years in investment banking at Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch, where she negotiated joint ventures between U.S. technology companies and the People's Republic of China.
Linda received her MBA from Stanford University and her bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Yale. She has two kids who love media almost as much as they love being outside.
