Rebecca Costa kept us on our mental game last week in our season closer of the 2013-14 Speak To Me Season. It was such a great night with wonderful women, a great topic and a brilliant speaker who seriously made us stop and think.
Here are some tips on how we as a society can deal with the complexity in our lives and with all hope not only survive but flourish in the upcoming decades.
Top 12 Things We Can Do To Stay a Few Steps Ahead of Extinction
1) Clean Air, Potable and Untainted Nutrition
The human organism needs certain things to survive: clean air, potable water, untainted nutrition, exercise, other life forms, etc., to sustain itself. Anything which interferes with these necessities should be made illegal and stopped by any means necessary. Our existence depends on it.
2) Follow Facts Not Beliefs
When complexity makes facts difficult or impossible to acquire, then the only other thing humans have are beliefs. By beliefs, I don’t mean religious beliefs. I mean anything we think is true but has not yet been proven. Once we begin confusing what we believe with what has actually been proven, it doesn’t take long for public policy to become shaped by irrational beliefs. We start down the same path as the Mayans who, as drought conditions worsened, stopped building reservoirs and began relying on sacrifice to make the rains return. To avoid a similar fate, we must become unrelenting, vigorous pursuers of proven facts.
